The Reality of Expectations

February 17, 2013

It seems that students are coming to us with lower fine motor skills and more auditory processing problems and more struggles with self -regulation.

As a teacher, I would like to prepare my students for a world that should be.

As a practical adult, I know not everything is as it should be and how I think things should be now, may even change over the years as I gain more experience and insight… as I learn.

Am I being responsible and fair to my students if I don’t give them some preparation for the reality that is to come, no matter how backward, unfair or imperfect it may be?

Am I encouraging them to make changes, to be all that they can be and inspiring them to innovate if I do not teach them to learn differently and expand their views of the classroom, learning and life?

As with most things, there is probably that elusive balance between the two. Still searching for it.
